Admissions Overview and Frequently Asked Questions
Thank you for your interest in Spring Street International School. In this section you will find all the necessary paperwork to complete the admissions process:
1) Application for Admission
2) Parent Questionnaire
3) Request for Records
4) Teacher Recommendation Forms
5) Student Information Form
You may download the complete Application Packet in here in Word or pdf format. Please be sure to sign the completed Application and return it to the school along with your check for $500 to secure a place for your child.
In addition to submission of these forms, it is expected that each applicant will attend Spring Street School on a designated visit day, and - with at least one, and preferably both parents - meet with the Director of Admissions. Meetings with the Director of Admissions may be arranged over summer vacation.
SSIS is still accepting applications for all grades except grade 12 . (Please note that processing will be slower in July due to our vacation schedule.) Upon acceptance, students will be sent an Enrollment Agreement. The completed Agreement must be returned to Spring Street International School within two weeks of notification of acceptance. For financial aid information, please contact our Director of Admissions, Jerry Riley.
What qualities is the school looking for among its candidates?
Spring Street School is looking for a variety of personal qualities in the students who will attend the school. Potential for academic success in a challenging program is very important. This is assessed a variety of ways, including evaluation of previous academic records, test scores, and teacher recommendations. More important to the school, however, than any particular measurable criteria, is a student who values learning, who recognizes the advantages of an education that is responsive to each students needs and abilities, and that challenges each student to develop his or her capacities in an intimate, supportive setting. We are interested in students of good character who will assume personal responsibility for making a positive contribution to the school community, who operate with integrity, and who will respect the dignity of others and their surroundings.
How many students are admitted to each grade? What is the size of the school? How large are classes?
The maximum number of students in any grade level at Spring Street School is 15. Consequently, up to 15 new sixth graders are enrolled each year, and students in other grades are added as openings develop. Maximum enrollment is 105 students in grades 6-12. Class sizes vary from 5 to 16. The student-teacher ratio is 10 to 1 or lower.
Are sibling applicants given special consideration?
The school recognizes the desirability of enrolling brothers and sisters; however, siblings are admitted only if they have demonstrated qualities likely to lead to success.
What happens on visitor days?
Visiting students are teamed with current students of similar age for a half or full day of class visits. These visits give your child a chance to experience many aspects of our program, the student/teacher relationship, and the expectations of the school. They also give our teachers an opportunity to meet your child, and through class exercises, to determine if your child would thrive in our school. If your child is scheduled for a full-day visit, please send a lunch. The school does not have a hot lunch program, although microwaves are available for warming.

If my child is admitted, are there other responsibilities I should know about?
Yes. As a small school operating almost exclusively on income from tuition that is significantly lower than other comparable independent schools, we depend upon active involvement by parents in a variety of ways. It is required that each parent will contribute a minimum of 25 hours per year assisting with maintenance/repair work, field trips, academic enrichment opportunities, etc.
A wide range of volunteer jobs is available, so parents have a choice of ways to contribute. We are proud of the level of involvement our parents have, and it is our experience that parent participation in the life of the school benefits parents and their students, as well as the school.
After my child has been admitted, what will happen between this year and the start of school?
There will be an orientation meeting for parents of all new students in early June, which will provide an opportunity for parents to meet each other and ask any questions they may have. Shortly after the end of this school year, all students who will be attending next year will receive a summer reading list that includes a few required summer projects, and a tentative school calendar. In mid-August, parents will be sent more information about the coming year, including a list of school supplies required, and class information. School begins the Tuesday after Labor Day each year.
If you have any further questions, or need assistance completing the application, please call our Admissions Director Jerry Riley at (360) 378-6393 or email admissions@springstreet.org.
