Rocky intertidal zonation and ecological surveys

The rocky shoreline is a rough place to live. The marine plants, animals and algae that call it home have to contend with pounding waves, freezing temperatures, baking sunlight, daily stranding above water and a crowded community populated by some very tough neighbors. But because all of this happens within the few meters of rock found between the highest high waters and the lowest low tides, the rocky intertidal (RIT) zone is the perfect place to learn about the scientific study of the distribution and abundance of organisms.
