After 33k, we’re 1 day away

The blessed fog lasted until 10:30 this morning. Then it got hot.  We trudged 33 km today to Oliveiroa.   We’ll start early tomorrow for the end of the world (Cape Fisterre).  The kids are concurrently excited and sad that their final hiking day is tomorrow.  Friday, we’ll head out to the lighthouse and spend some time at 0.0 km. The kids have been counting down since Santiago.  Then, that afternoon, we’ll bus (faster than 3 mph for the first time in 2 weeks) back to Santiago and jump on the train towards Paris Saturday.  Sunday, we’ll have a half day in Paris before heading home Monday morning. Buen Camino

Therapeutic Riding Internship

Therapeutic riding helps people with a wide range of disabilities, and each person benefits from it in a different way. At VTRA I have learned how riding horses can help people with disabilities. One of the main ways it helps is as a person sits in the saddle, they have to use their muscles to balance themselves while on the horse. Like VTRA’S handbook says, “This is the student’s ability to remain in equilibrium with the moving mass of the horse. The rider will have to develop the ability to position the body in equilibrium to make allowances for the force the horse will produce.” Their is one rider who … Continue reading

Pharmacy Internship: Days 8 and 9

Saturday was crazy busy, but there would be some moments when it was eerily quiet. I priced t-shirts between customers and straightened shelves. Sunday was busy in the morning and right before we closed. During lunch, most of the tourists faded away to get food. The day was spent ringing up customers and pricing towels. Don’t have to work til Wednesday. Cheers, Aspen

Biology Field Internship

Today Russel and I, along with other volunteers and scientists, went to Indian Island.  Indian Island, which was also be called Japanese Island because a Japanese person lived on it, is a small, two acer island a few hundred yards away from East Sound on Orcas Island.  We went there to do surveys, including counting all of the sea stars around the island.  We did this because in 2011 or 12 the population in the area had a severe decrease in population because of an epidemic.  Before of the epidemic, scientists on the islands would survey the area and count 500 or so individuals, but, when the outbreak happened, there were only 200 … Continue reading

Pharmacy Internship: Day 7

Today was rather busy. Everyone is coming to the island for Memorial Day weekend. I sold lots of flip flops and crocs; the weather is making everyone crazy. I priced the most adorable little onesies and shoelaces. We got a whole new box of fidget spinners; we had sold out last week. They are insanely popular. (I don’t get it.) The credit card machines were being fussy; most times a customer would have to swipe their card twice. Tomorrow should be our busiest day, and we already have a few balloon orders coming in. Til tomorrow. Cheers, Aspen

Pharmacy Internship: Day 6

Today was filled with pricing items and gearing up for the crazy weekend. We ordered many souvenir items in order to be prepared, and the balloon orders have started coming in.  “Memorial day weekend is coming,” I say gravely, staring off into nothingness with the wind blowing my hair gracefully. Cheers, Aspen (if you don’t hear from me by Monday, I’ve been trampled.)

Santiago and Beyond

It’s always a little rough getting restarted towards the coast after a rest day but we did.  This is about an hour outside of Santiago (you can see the cathedral in the distance). Some hill work after that got us to  this medieval bridge.  We’re now in Negreira, doing laundry and getting dinner ready. 2 more days to Fisterre and then we’ll start back towards Paris and ultimately home. Buen Camino

It was a long haul but we made it to Santiago!   Everyone will sleep good tonight and the rest day tomorrow is  well deserved.  Buen Camino

1 Day Away

Here’s a map of what we’ve done so far.  Find Gijon in the upper left.  We started there last Tuesday.  We’re now in Arzua and 1 day from Santiago. We got an early start out of the Sobrades monastery  this morning on our way to Arzua.  25 km later we’re in a nice hostel here. Several pictures to share as I finally have WiFi.  Here are some from the monastery. Here’s a couple of our soaked stuff drying out at the cafe and us getting grub for the first time yesterday. Finally, here’s a water break we took at the church in Sendella today.
